WHY

There can be many reasons for hair loss. These can include one or a mixture of hereditary, environmental, dietary, stress, health, and medication factors.

For men in Singapore, the most common reason for hair loss is genetics: 90% of all instances of noticeable male hair loss is caused by Androgenetic Alopecia. This inherited predisposition to hair loss is the result of hair follicles being susceptible to a hormone, DHT, which results in male pattern baldness.

Early diagnosis and medical treatment is essential to arrest hair loss and start recovery.

COMMON TYPES

Androgenetic Alopecia

90% of all instances of noticeable hair loss in men is caused by Androgenetic Alopecia, or Male Pattern Baldness. It is characterised by a receding hairline and the gradual disappearance of hair from the crown and frontal scalp.

Androgenetic Alopecia affects a large portion of men in Singapore and can start as early as adolescence. Men who start losing hair at an early age will experience more extensive baldness later in life. Men in their 50s have a 50% chance of showing some degree of hair loss. As they get older, this percentage increases. In their lifetime, 66% of men in Singapore will experience hair loss.

Without intervention, many men with Androgenetic Alopecia will have hair loss that eventually progresses to advanced stages of baldness.

Alopecia Areata

This is a patchy type of hair loss where the body’s own immune system attacks the cells that grow hair. In severe cases it can progress to complete baldness. It is painless, does not itch and often noticed by the patient’s partner or friends. This is not an inherited condition and the cause is often unknown. Despite this, there are medical treatments available to slow and reverse this form of hair loss. In most cases, recovery can be full and permanent, but early detection and treatment is essential.

Telogen Effluvium

This is a sudden and dramatic loss of hair within a very short period of time. This distressing condition causes large amounts of hair to fall off in the shower or even with gentle combing. This can be caused by illness, stress both emotional and physical, and medications.
